Finally, a really good pressure cooker!

August 7th, 2010 -

I’ve owned 3 pressure cookers over the years, and all of them suffered from locking mechanisms that wouldn’t actuate and let steam blast through until you shook the pots or pounded them with spoons to get them to actuate. But this cooker has a responsive mechanism that vents the air out and then actuates reliably as soon as the pressure begins to build up.

Beyond that, it’s well-built, with a thick bottom to distribute heat and resist heat distortion. I expect this cooker to last longer than I will.

If you’re uncertain about whether you should own a pressure cooker, here’s my opinion: pressure cooking is the best way to cook vegetables, including potatoes, and the best way to cook rice, beans, or rice-and-beans. It’s good for cooking hamburger for meat sauce, because there’s no smoke and the grease drips into the cooker where it’s easy to clean as long as the cooker is warm. There are some cool things you can do with chicken and it’s an easy way to make puddings. I prefer the presto 6 quart pressure cooker for heating leftovers because they come out as if they’re freshly cooked instead of dry and unevenly heated like you get from microwaves.

Freeman Has Great Customer Support

August 7th, 2010 -

I purchased 900 sq. feet of hardwood flooring to replace some worn carpeting in our house and decided to try installing Freeman PFL618BR Flooring Nailer myself. Since I was doing the job over several weeks, renting a flooring nailer at $30/day was not practical so I decided to purchase one. I purchased the Freeman based on the reviews, reasonable cost, warranty and availability of replacement parts. The gun arrived in a nice case with a sturdy hammer and an easy to understand manual. I never had a nail jam and the gun worked great but about halfway through the first room the driver blade failed to retract after firing a nail. This happened a few times despite making sure the tool was oiled before operation. It could sometimes be remedied by pulling back on the magazine spring, but I did have to remove the drive guide a couple of times to correct it. I called Freeman’s 800 number and spoke with a very helpful person who suggested I try a test involving my compressor and call back with the results. Unfortunately, the problem persisted. When I called back again I was told that they were very sorry I experienced problems with their product and they would replace the nailer and send me a return shipping label for the defective tool. I was expecting to get the label in the mail, return the defective tool and then get the replacement as that is how most companies operate. I was very surprised to have a brand new nailer arrive a few days later with the return shipping label enclosed. This is clearly a company that stands behind their products with outstanding customer service. The other reviewers of this nailer reported trouble free operation but problems can occur with any tool, even the most expensive. I can recommend buying any Freeman tool with confidence because of the 7 year warranty and a company that truly backs it up with great customer support. I gave the tool 5 starts despite the glitch because of my positive experience with customer service. I also purchased a Freeman PFN64 Finish Nailer for my project that has performed flawlessly.

Some Assembly Required still the standard

August 7th, 2010 -

I bought one of these in 1988. It was already -quite- old, (probably from 1977, the first year Schwinn Airdynewas made, which means the 30 year warrantee is -still- in effect!), and not well taken care of. Whatever abuse it took only made it a little dirty. It’s almost 2007, and it’s still working perfectly. The all-steel construction has kept it repair-free while newer machines go into the garbage. Different year models come with different monitors, so I won’t go into that, but the machine itself is always the same: No shifting. The fan-resistance increases with pedaling speed. Arms and legs contribute whatever proportions of the total effort you desire, a very natural intuitive movement. For arms only, there’s a foot-rest, for legs only, just hang your arms at your sides. (The Airdyne is not a bicycle, not a ’spinner’, it is a thing unto itself, but unless road-bike technique is an issue, it will do more than spinning can do for your fitness.)The warrantee, or any other right to complaint, is probably voided if you stand up while pedaling, but I’ve been able to stand on these pedals for all these years, and the combination of arms and legs while out of the seat is the most intense workout available on a home cycle. (I did eventually get a Schwinn ‘Windsprint’, because it shifts to increase pedal pressure, but it doesn’t ‘do’ arms. This is still the single best home cycle.)

Most beautiful piece of cookware I have

August 7th, 2010 -

You can spend easily $200.00 and more for a pot this size, but why do that if you can buy this Cuisinart for less than one fifth of that. Cuisinart Chef’s Classic 12-Quart has the same 18/10 stainless, the same bolted handles, the same tight fitting covers, but not the same price. The encapsulated aluminum disc bottom does the trick. Heat rises from the bottom of the pan to the top which means this type of pan will heat up just as fast and just as well as the competitors $200.00 pan will and at a fraction of the price. The Cuisinart was top rated in the leading consumer magazine just a short time ago and they take no ads and answer to no one.
